Hair Quiz

How the Watermans hair quiz works

It takes about two minutes. You answer fifteen questions about your hair, your scalp and what has been going on in your life, and we come back with one thing to start with, what is in it, and an honest timescale. Not a shopping list of ten bottles. There is no sign up, no form and no email to hand over, and your result appears the moment you answer the last question. Nothing is required either, so share only what you are comfortable with and skip anything you would rather not answer.

What we ask about

  • What your hair is doing now: thinning, shedding, breaking, dry and rough, flat, a hairline that has moved, or nothing at all.
  • When it changed, because something that came on in three months points somewhere very different to a slow drift over years.
  • Your hair type and what it goes through: heat, bleach and highlights, colour, extensions, tight styles, hard water.
  • Your scalp, since a scalp that is oily, dry, flaky or itchy changes what we would put on it.
  • Anything hormonal: perimenopause and menopause, HRT, gender affirming hormone therapy, after a baby, contraception, pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Anything big your body has been through: illness including COVID, an operation or general anaesthetic, chemotherapy or radiotherapy, rapid weight loss, a new prescription, low iron or a thyroid condition, or a bereavement.
  • Stress, sleep, diet, and what you have already tried.
  • And last, how you want to start. Whether you want the complete routine from day one, would rather start simple with something you can stick to, or need it looking better this week.

Who built this quiz?

The recommendations follow how our founder Gail Waterman would talk someone through it in the salon. Gail has been in the salon industry for thirty five years, and Watermans was built out of what she kept being asked for behind the chair. The quiz asks the questions she would ask, in the order she would ask them, and it gives you the same answer she would, including the times when the honest answer is that a shampoo is not the thing you need.

What is the complete four step routine?

The Follicle Fuel Kit, £69.95, which is £77.35 if you buy the four items separately. Four steps: wash with Grow Me, condition with Condition Me, treat the scalp overnight with the Grow More elixir, then the GrowPro gummies, which contain biotin, zinc and selenium. Biotin, zinc and selenium each contribute to the maintenance of normal hair. It is what the quiz gives you if you say you want the complete routine from day one, because it is the only set that covers the hair itself and works from the inside at the same time.

Do I have to give you my email?

No. There is no form and nothing to fill in. Answer the questions and your result appears on the screen. Plenty of hair quizzes hold your result back until you hand over an address. We would rather just show you.

What happens to my answers?

The quiz does not collect them. There is no form, we never ask for your email, and your result is worked out in your browser rather than submitted to us, so nothing you tick here is added to a customer record or an email list. Like any online shop, our website as a whole uses cookies and analytics tools, and you control those through the cookie banner and our privacy policy. Some of what the quiz asks about, such as health, hormones and cancer treatment, would count as special category data under UK GDPR, which is exactly why we chose not to ask you to submit any of it. Share only what you are comfortable with, and skip anything you would rather not answer. The quiz still works.

What is in the Menopause Hair Care Kit?

Five products, for £69.99. The kit contains Grow Me shampoo, Condition Me conditioner, the Grow More overnight scalp elixir, the Allevi8 daily wellbeing supplement and Moisturise Me face and hand cream, which comes to £92.35 if you bought all five separately. It covers the hair and the drier skin that often comes with this stage, and Allevi8 was blended by our founder Gail Waterman while going through menopause herself. If it is more than you want to start with, the quiz will also show you the 3 step routine underneath it, which is the same shampoo, conditioner and elixir without the supplement or the moisturiser.

Should I start with one product or the full routine?

Either is a real answer and the quiz will respect whichever you pick. One bottle you actually use beats a big kit you use twice, and consistency is the thing that separates the people who get somewhere from the people who do not. If you would rather start simple we lead with the shampoo, because that is the part of the routine worth having if you only have one, and we show you what to add underneath so you know where you are heading. Subscribing saves 15% and means you are never caught without it halfway through. If you would rather do the whole thing from day one, you get the four step Follicle Fuel Kit and the same honest note that it still takes around three months.

How long does it really take to see a difference?

Around three months. Hair grows on a cycle and it is slow, so there is genuinely nothing to see in the first few weeks no matter what you use. Some people notice less hair in the brush and a calmer scalp sooner than that, but plenty see nothing at all until the three month mark, and that is normal rather than a sign it has failed. Most people give up at week three, which is right before the point it gets interesting. Take a photo on day one so you have something honest to compare against. Every routine the quiz recommends is covered by our 90 day money back guarantee, which exists precisely because it takes that long to know.

I want it to look better now, not in three months

Then say so on the last question and the quiz will put the instant option first. InstaHair hair building fibres are a cosmetic cover up. They cling to the hair you already have so a see through parting or a thin patch reads fuller in about ten seconds, they come in five shades, and they wash out with your next shampoo. They change nothing underneath, which is what the routine is for. The two are not in competition, one buys you today and the other is the one that matters in three months.

Which set do most people end up with?

The 3 step routine, our shampoo, conditioner and the Grow More overnight scalp elixir. It is the set we sell more of than any other and it is where the quiz points most people, because it covers both ends of the problem at once: the shampoo and conditioner look after the hair you can see, and the elixir goes on a dry scalp at night and stays there between washes. It is also the sensible answer for fine hair that is thinning and in poor condition at the same time, and it is the option we show underneath the menopause kit for anyone who would rather start with something smaller.

Why we ask about hormones and health

Because they change the answer. A shed that follows a birth behaves nothing like a hairline that has been moving back for ten years, and neither behaves like hair that is snapping off halfway down from straighteners. Hormone therapy of any kind rewrites the hair growth cycle itself, whichever direction it is moving in, and almost nobody in hair care asks about it properly. If your answers point at something a shampoo cannot help with, such as low iron, an under active thyroid or a medicine side effect, the quiz will tell you to go and get that checked instead of selling you a routine.

I have afro, coily or curly hair. What should I use?

It depends which problem you came here with, and the quiz sorts that out for you. If your issue is dryness, frizz, breakage or curl definition, the answer is our Frojus range. It is sulphate free and built around moisture, it softens and detangles, and it defines curls without weighing them down. If your issue is density, thinning or shedding, the answer is Grow Me shampoo with the Grow More overnight scalp elixir, because those two work on the scalp rather than the hair. Plenty of people run both, Grow Me two or three times a week for the scalp and Frojus on the days in between for moisture. Frojus will always be shown to you whichever way the quiz leans, so you can decide for yourself.

My hair is bleached or blonde and it has gone brassy

Brass is tone, not damage. Bleached and highlighted hair turns warm and yellow as the toner washes out, and that is what makes blonde look cheap long before the condition does. Tone Me is a sulphate free purple shampoo that neutralises it. Use it once a week in place of your normal shampoo, and no more than that or you can tip ashy. It does the same job on grey and silver hair. Bleach is also the harshest thing most people do to their hair, so pair it with a weekly mask and heat protection, because the breakage is what turns up months after the colour does.

My hair is dry, rough or brittle. What should I use?

Dry and brittle hair is damage, not dirt, and no shampoo will fix it. Hair is not alive, so once the outer layer is worn away by heat, bleach, colour or hard water it cannot repair itself. What you can do is put condition back in and stop adding more damage. Use Masque Me once a week in place of your conditioner, leave it five to ten minutes and rinse, and work a few drops of the Camellia and Black Castor hair and body oil through your mid lengths and ends between washes. Add heat protection before every single heat tool. That combination is what stops hair snapping off, which is what most people are actually seeing when they say their hair has stopped growing.

Is this medical advice?

No. It is a product recommendation tool. Watermans products are cosmetics and food supplements, not medicines, and nothing here diagnoses anything. If your hair is coming out suddenly, in patches, or alongside a sore, scarring or weeping scalp, please see your GP or a pharmacist.

What if I am pregnant, breastfeeding or having cancer treatment?

The quiz takes the supplements out of your recommendation automatically and tells you why. Please speak to your midwife, GP, pharmacist or oncology team about anything you take by mouth, and about anything you put on your scalp during treatment.
