Root causes
Postpartum shedding is your hormones resetting, and your GP, midwife or health visitor can check anything that worries you. What you wash with is yours to control. Every card ends with the one thing you can do today.
Pregnancy oestrogen kept hairs in the growing phase that would normally have shed. After the birth it falls fast and those hairs all let go together, usually from month three. It looks dramatic because it is months of normal shedding arriving at once. Wash with a routine that strengthens what you keep and does not strip the scalp.
Night feeds and exhaustion are a physical stress, and stress pushes more follicles into their resting phase on top of the hormone drop. You cannot fix the sleep yet. You can stop adding breakage on top: no scraped-back buns, no rough towel-drying, condition the lengths every wash.
Pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding use up iron, protein and nutrients, and hair is last in the queue for whatever is left. Low iron is one of the most common reasons shedding drags on past the first year. Eat properly, and ask your GP for a ferritin check if you feel wiped out.
