Biotin deserves a specific warning because it is the headline ingredient in most hair supplements. How does a shortage actually affect the hair cycle?

Every follicle cycles through a long growing phase, a short transitional phase and a resting phase before the hair is released. At any moment roughly 85 to 90 percent of your hair should be growing.

Hair is metabolically expensive and biologically non essential. When the body is short of a key building block, follicles are among the first tissues to be deprioritised. Follicles exit the growing phase early and enter the resting phase in unusually large numbers, and because the resting phase lasts around three months, the shedding appears two to three months after the shortage began. Hair breakage is the fibre snapping from bleach, heat, tension or rough handling. How is nutritional deficiency hair loss confirmed?

By blood test, arranged through your GP. This is the part people most want to skip and least should.

The tests usually worth asking about are ferritin, which reflects iron stores and is the single most useful one; a full blood count, which detects anaemia; thyroid function, because thyroid disorders cause identical diffuse shedding and are very commonly the real answer; vitamin D; vitamin B12 and folate; and sometimes zinc.

Why ferritin specifically

You can have a completely normal full blood count and still have depleted iron stores, because the body protects haemoglobin at the expense of its reserves. Ferritin is what shows that. Ask for the actual number rather than accepting normal, because the reference range is wide and the level associated with shedding sits toward the lower end of it.

One important caveat: ferritin also rises with inflammation and infection, so a result taken while you are unwell can look reassuring when your stores are genuinely low. Your GP will interpret it alongside the rest of the picture, which is exactly why guessing from a symptom list does not work.

See your GP promptly rather than experimenting if you are shedding heavily for more than about three months, if you are also tired, breathless or unusually pale, if hair is coming out in defined patches, if your periods are heavy, or if you follow a restricted diet. Knowing what normal shedding looks like helps you judge whether what you are seeing is genuinely outside the usual range.

Food first is the sensible default, because whole foods deliver nutrients in quantities and combinations that are hard to overdo.

Absorption matters as much as intake, which is why pairing foods sensibly beats simply eating more.

The vitamin C pairing is worth acting on. Squeezing lemon over lentils, or having fruit with a fortified cereal, meaningfully increases how much iron you absorb from a plant based meal. Drinking strong tea with the same meal meaningfully reduces it.

Can supplements cause hair loss too?

Yes, and this is the part the supplement aisle does not advertise. Excess selenium is a well documented cause of hair falling out, and the gap between a useful intake and a harmful one is narrower than for most nutrients. Excess vitamin A does the same. Very high dose zinc taken for long periods interferes with copper absorption, which causes its own problems.

The pattern to avoid is the common one: notice shedding, buy a high strength multi nutrient hair supplement, take it alongside a separate vitamin D and a separate zinc, and end up well above the safe upper limit for several nutrients at once. Correcting a shortage you actually have is useful. Loading nutrients you do not need is at best wasted money and at worst the cause of the problem.

The rule that avoids most of this

Test, then correct what is actually low, then re test. Do not supplement a nutrient at high dose indefinitely on the basis of a symptom that has a dozen possible causes.

How long does recovery take?

Longer than anybody wants. Correcting iron stores alone typically takes three to six months of consistent intake, and the hair cycle then has to turn before you see the benefit. Realistically, expect shedding to slow within about three months of correcting a genuine shortage, visible new growth around the four to six month mark, and a return to your usual density somewhere between six and twelve months.

New hairs come through short and fine, so an early sign of recovery is a fringe of short hairs along the hairline and parting. Those are tapered at the tip, unlike breakage, which is blunt. Photograph your parting in the same light every three months so you have something objective to compare against.
