Follicular Neogenesis: Can You Grow New Hair Follicles?

Follicular neogenesis is the formation of brand new hair follicles in skin that did not have them, rather than the revival of follicles that already exist. In humans it is a laboratory research field, not a product, a clinic service or anything you can buy. Nothing currently sold in the UK, from any brand including ours, creates a new follicle in adult scalp skin.

Key takeaways

  • Neogenesis means making new follicles. Everything on the shelf works on follicles you already have.
  • Humans are generally considered to finish making scalp follicles before birth, with roughly 100,000 on the head and no natural resupply.
  • The promising results come mostly from mouse wound healing work and from cultured cells. Human scalp evidence remains limited.
  • A hair transplant moves existing follicles from one part of your head to another. It does not create any.
  • While the science develops, the practical win is protecting the follicles and fibres you still have from avoidable damage.

What is follicular neogenesis?

Follicular neogenesis describes the growth of a completely new hair follicle from scratch, usually from stem cells in the skin organising themselves into the structure that produces a hair. The word neogenesis simply means new formation, which is what distinguishes it from every product, procedure and routine that works on follicles already present in your scalp.

That distinction sounds academic and it is not. Almost every claim a reader meets online about new hair is actually about persuading an existing follicle to produce a thicker fibre for longer. Creating a follicle where none exists is a different order of problem, and it is the reason this remains a research subject rather than a purchase.

Can adults grow new hair follicles?

Adult humans are not currently understood to form new scalp follicles in ordinary circumstances. The follicle count you carry is broadly established before birth, at roughly 100,000 on an adult scalp, and it declines slowly with age rather than being topped up. A bald scalp is not an empty one, but the follicles left there have usually shrunk rather than disappeared.

The interesting exception is wounding. Work in mice has shown new follicles forming at the centre of large healing wounds, a phenomenon usually called wound induced hair neogenesis, and there are scattered historical reports of hair appearing in human scar tissue. Neither is a technique anyone can offer you, and neither has been shown to restore density across a thinning scalp. For a related angle, see our guide to hormone-induced alopecia.

How is follicular neogenesis different from a hair transplant?

A hair transplant relocates follicles that already belong to you, taking them from the back and sides of the scalp where they are less androgen sensitive and placing them where density is low. The total number of follicles on your head does not change. New follicle formation, by contrast, would add follicles to the total, which is precisely why it attracts so much research money.

Where new follicle formation sits next to what you can actually buy
Approach What it does to your follicle count Availability in the UK What it works on
Cosmetic hair care No change Widely available The fibre and the scalp environment
Hair transplant surgery No change, follicles are moved Available privately through surgeons Redistributing existing follicles
New follicle formation Would increase the count Research stage only Building new follicles from cells
Hair systems and fibres No change Widely available Appearance only, instantly

If transplant surgery is what you were really researching, our page on pattern hair loss, its stages and causes explains why donor hair behaves differently once moved, and what actually works for hair loss, honestly ranks the realistic options without the sales gloss.

Why does follicular neogenesis matter for hair loss?

Pattern hair loss ends, eventually, with follicles that have miniaturised so far that they produce almost nothing. Once a follicle is genuinely gone, as happens in scarring alopecias where inflammation destroys the structure permanently, no product and no medicine can bring it back. Growing a new follicle is the only theoretical route to replacing what has been lost in those situations. A related question is whether existing follicles can be restarted, covered in reactivating dormant hair follicles naturally.

That is also why the field is worth watching without holding your breath. Research papers describing new follicles from cultured cells are genuinely exciting science. They are not close to a service you can book, and any UK company implying otherwise is describing something the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency would want a very long conversation about.

A useful test for any claim you meet

Ask whether the claim is about making new follicles or about improving the ones you have. Almost everything honest sits in the second group. Anything that claims the first, and is available to buy today, is overstating what it can do.

Is it hair loss, shedding or breakage you are actually dealing with?

Hair loss, hair shedding and hair breakage are three different problems and only the first has anything to do with follicle numbers. Hair loss means follicles producing less, or nothing. Hair shedding means healthy follicles releasing hairs early because the cycle was disturbed by illness, stress, childbirth or a hormonal change, with density typically recovering over six to nine months.

Hair breakage is not a follicle problem at all. The fibre snaps somewhere along its length because of heat, tension, chemical processing or rough handling, and the follicle underneath is healthy. Most people who arrive at a page about new follicle science are actually dealing with one of the second two, both of which respond to changes you can make this week.

What does the evidence on follicular neogenesis actually show?

Published work in this field clusters into three groups, and their strength varies sharply. Mouse wound healing studies are the most convincing, showing new follicles forming under specific conditions. Cell culture work has produced follicle like structures in a dish. Human scalp evidence is the thinnest of the three, and no UK licensed product rests on it.

Where good sources disagree, it is usually about whether mouse skin is a fair model for human scalp. Mouse hair cycles in synchronised waves and human hair does not, so a result that looks decisive in a mouse can translate poorly. Reporting a laboratory result as an imminent breakthrough, which several consumer articles do, skips over that gap entirely.

The honest summary is that new follicle formation is real biology being actively investigated, with no timeline anybody can responsibly give you. Read any specific date you are offered as marketing. In the meantime, the NHS remains the correct first stop for hair loss that is progressing, and the British Association of Dermatologists publishes plain English leaflets on the conditions most often involved.

What can you do today while follicular neogenesis stays in the laboratory?

Protecting the hair you have is unglamorous and it is the one thing with a dependable effect on how your hair looks this month. Every hair that snaps is density you lose without any follicle being involved, and on a scalp that is already thinning, avoidable breakage does a disproportionate amount of the visible damage.

Four habits carry most of the benefit. Wash with something that cleans without stripping. Condition every wash, concentrating on the mid lengths and ends. Detangle wet hair from the ends upwards with a wide tooth comb. And take the tension out of your everyday style, because traction at the hairline is one of the few causes of permanent loss you can genuinely prevent.

Dropper applying a scalp serum to the roots, the everyday alternative to follicular neogenesis

If the ingredient side interests you, our evidence review of what the research on rosemary oil for hair actually says is deliberately unexcited, and the hair growth cycle explained covers the anagen, catagen and telogen phases that every one of these claims depends on.

When should you see a GP instead of waiting for new science?

See a GP if your hair loss is patchy with smooth skin, if the scalp is sore, red, scaly or scarred, if hair is coming out in clumps, if the parting has widened noticeably within a year, or if the loss comes alongside tiredness, weight change or irregular periods. Scarring conditions in particular are time critical, because inflammation that destroys a follicle destroys it permanently and no future science undoes that. If your question is about products or a routine rather than a medical one, you can talk to Gail Waterman, our co-founder, as an AI avatar on the Watermans homepage.

Bring dated photographs in consistent lighting and a note of when you first noticed the change. If you want a non medical second opinion on hair care specifically, the Institute of Trichologists maintains a public register of qualified members in the UK. Watermans does not run clinics and does not offer consultations.

What are the most frequently asked questions about new follicle science?

Is follicular neogenesis available anywhere in the world?

Not as an approved medicine or a licensed procedure. The whole field remains a research one, and any UK clinic or brand offering it as a service today is describing something regulators have not authorised.

Can a shampoo create new hair follicles?

No. A cosmetic shampoo works on the hair fibre and the scalp surface. Watermans products are cosmetic and make no claim to change follicle numbers, which no topical product has been shown to do.

How many hair follicles does a person have?

Roughly 100,000 on an adult scalp, established before birth. The number declines gradually with age and is not naturally replenished, which is exactly the problem this research is trying to solve.

Does a hair transplant create new follicles?

No. Transplant surgery moves follicles you already have from the back and sides of the scalp to thinner areas. Your total count stays the same, which is why donor supply limits what surgery can achieve.

Is hair on a scar the same as growing a new follicle?

Occasionally reported and rarely convincing. Most hair near a scar comes from follicles at the wound edge that survived. Genuine new follicle formation in human scar tissue is documented only in scattered case reports.

Will new follicle formation be available in five years?

Nobody can responsibly promise a date. Any specific timeline you are quoted, especially one attached to a pre order or a waiting list, should be read as marketing rather than as a forecast.

If my follicles are still alive, do I need new ones?

Probably not. Miniaturised follicles are still present and still cycling, which is why medical options exist for pattern hair loss. Follicle replacement matters most in scarring conditions where the structure has been destroyed.

What is the most useful thing I can do while I wait?

Protect what you have. Reduce breakage, take tension out of your styling, get bloods checked if shedding is worsening, and see a GP early for anything patchy, painful or scarring.

What is the bottom line on follicular neogenesis?

Follicular neogenesis is genuine science at an early stage, and it is the only route that could ever add follicles rather than redistribute or improve them. Nothing available in the UK today does it, and any product implying otherwise is overreaching. Work out first whether you are dealing with loss, shedding or breakage, see a GP for anything patchy, painful or progressing, and protect the hair you have in the meantime.

The one purchase that reliably earns its place while you wait is a gentler wash. A sulphate free hair growth shampoo cleans without stripping and cuts the breakage that costs you visible density for no follicular reason at all.

Watermans products are 100% cosmetic and do not treat medical hair loss. Individual results may vary.
