What is a tinted sunscreen, actually?
A tinted sunscreen is a sunscreen with pigment added, and in nearly all cases that pigment is iron oxides, sometimes alongside titanium dioxide. Iron oxides are the same family of pigments used in foundation, and they come in red, yellow and black shades that get blended to produce skin tones.
Originally the tint solved a purely cosmetic problem. Mineral sunscreens rely on zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, both of which are white, so they leave a visible cast that ranges from mildly annoying on pale skin to completely unwearable on deep skin. Adding iron oxides cancels that cast.
The useful discovery came afterwards. Iron oxides turned out to absorb visible light, especially the shorter blue violet wavelengths, which the transparent UV filters largely ignore. So a cosmetic fix turned out to close a real protective gap.
Why does visible light matter if it does not burn you?
Sunburn, DNA damage and skin cancer risk are driven mainly by ultraviolet, and that is what SPF and the UVA rating describe. But burning is not the only thing sunlight does to skin.
Visible light, the part you can actually see, makes up a much larger share of what reaches the ground than UV does. Research using controlled light exposure has shown that visible light can induce pigmentation, and that the effect is more pronounced and longer lasting in people with more melanin in their skin. In lighter skin the response tends to be mild and short lived. In medium and deeper tones it can be marked and persistent.
This explains something that frustrates a lot of people: doing everything right with a high SPF and still watching melasma darken through the summer. Melasma deserves its own section because it is the condition people most often try to solve with sunscreen alone, and it is the one where that most often disappoints.
Melasma appears as symmetrical brown or grey brown patches, usually across the cheeks, forehead, upper lip and jawline. It is strongly associated with hormonal changes, which is why it is common in pregnancy and with hormonal contraception, and it is aggravated by light and by heat. It is also genuinely stubborn and prone to returning, which is not a reflection of anything you have done wrong.
Diligent daily protection, tinted, is the foundation of every serious melasma plan, and without it other treatments tend to fail. Fading usually requires prescribed topical treatment, and options are chosen based on how deep the pigment sits, which is something a clinician can assess and you cannot.
