In 2022, researchers at Kao's European laboratories published a detailed look at the cuticle, the overlapping scales that wrap every strand, in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science. They found the cuticle swells as it takes up moisture and plays a specific part in how the whole fibre handles water. Ends that have been brushed, coloured and heat styled for a year or two have a more worn cuticle than the hair near your scalp, which helps explain why winter dryness nearly always shows at the ends first.

Your scalp is skin, and heated rooms affect skin quickly. A 2023 study in Skin Research and Technology asked healthy women to spend at least 6 hours a day in a heated indoor room during winter, then measured the changes. After 6 hours, roughness and redness on the face had increased significantly, and water loss through the skin of the forearm had risen. None of this is a reason to sit in a cold house. Winter hair goes static because rubbing hair against a hat, scarf, brush or pillow moves electric charge between the two surfaces, leaving many strands carrying the same charge, and strands with the same charge push each other apart, which is exactly what flyaways are, while dry air makes that charge slower to leak away.

Hair is unusually good at this. In a 2018 paper in Advanced Materials, Kim and colleagues at POSTECH in South Korea noted that human skin and hair lose electrons easily when rubbed against other materials and sit high in the triboelectric series, the ranking scientists use for how readily materials charge by friction. Their experiments traced the positive static to the lipid layers on the surface of hair and skin, rather than to the protein underneath.

Charge also affects how hair feels and behaves day to day. Seshadri and Bhushan at Ohio State University opened their 2008 study by noting that the manageability and feel of hair are significantly affected by its surface charge, and then compared how charge built up and faded on untouched, damaged and conditioner-treated hair. Add the Shiseido finding that drier hair resists the flow of charge more, and you have the familiar winter picture: a warm, dry room, a wool jumper pulled over the head, and a halo of hair that will not lie flat.

Static is more than a cosmetic nuisance, because it can feed breakage. Robbins and Kamath, testing hair tresses at the Textile Research Institute in Princeton, found that short broken pieces, under about 2.5 cm, come mainly from ends wrapping around each other as a comb passes through dry hair, which they put down to inertia and possibly static charge. In their tests, short pieces multiplied with every extra comb stroke on dry hair, while a commercial conditioner reduced both short and long breaks.

That is why conditioner is the first fix for static. A 2015 review of shampoos and conditioners in the Indian Journal of Dermatology describes conditioners as designed to improve manageability, decrease hair static electricity and add lustre. The science of hair friction explains why the damage builds slowly. A 2025 review of hair tribology in Advances in Colloid and Interface Science, written by engineers at Imperial College London with Procter and Gamble scientists, explains that hair friction rises as hair ages and weathers, mainly because it loses a protective fatty layer called 18-MEA from its surface. In winter, the rubbing comes from places you might not think about: the ribbed edge of a beanie at the hairline, a chunky scarf wound over long hair, a coat collar that saws across the nape every time you turn your head, and a seatbelt strap on the drive into town. Hair at the nape is also usually the finest and the most often tucked into clothes, so short, frayed pieces there are a classic winter find.

  • Keep the hat, change the fit. A hat that sits loosely does less rubbing than a tight one that grips the hairline.
  • Look for a smooth lining. Silk or satin linings are widely recommended, but we could not find a good study that measured breakage with and without one, so see the idea as a cheap experiment rather than a sure thing.
  • Wear the scarf over the collar, hair inside the coat. A loose, low plait tucked inside reduces how many strands meet the wool.
  • Never put a hat on damp hair. Wet hair is at its weakest, and a hat traps the damp against the scalp for hours.

Long, hot showers probably add to winter dryness rather than cause it, but no good study has measured shower temperature against hair breakage, so the honest answer rests on two firmer findings: wet hair is weaker than dry hair, and repeated swelling and drying of the fibre may wear it down over months of washing.

The first finding comes from the same Princeton combing tests. Robbins and Kamath found that water plasticises hair, lowering the load it can take before it breaks, and that combing wet hair produced more long breaks higher up the tress, because wet hairs clump and snag. The American Academy of Dermatology gives the practical version: hair is delicate when it is wet, so detangle it with a wide-tooth comb rather than a brush.

The second comes from hair science on hygral fatigue. A 2001 study in the Journal of Cosmetic Science described the swelling and deswelling of hair as it gets wet and dries as one of the causes of hair damage, and found that coconut oil, which soaked into the hair shaft, limited that swelling while mineral oil, which stayed on the surface, did not. A long, hot shower keeps hair soaked for longer, which is the part worth trimming back, whatever the exact temperature.

The scalp has its own reasons to prefer cooler water. The NHS lists heat and changes in temperature among the things that can set off atopic eczema, so anyone whose scalp is prone to eczema may find lukewarm water kinder, especially after coming in from the cold.

  1. Turn the temperature down a notch. Aim for comfortably warm rather than steaming.
  2. Wash your hair at the end. Shampoo and condition last so your hair is not sitting wet through the whole shower.
  3. Blot, do not rub. Squeeze water out with a towel or an old cotton T-shirt instead of scrubbing.
  4. Detangle with conditioner in. Use a wide-tooth comb from the ends upwards before you rinse.

How can you tell winter breakage from shedding and real hair loss?

Winter breakage, shedding and real hair loss are three different problems: breakage is the hair fibre snapping somewhere along its length, shedding is the growth cycle releasing whole hairs from the root, and hair loss means the follicles themselves are changing, so the scalp shows patches, a widening parting or a receding line.

Dry air, wool and hot tools can only cause the first of these. They act on the part of the hair above the scalp, which is non-living keratin, and have no route to the follicle. The NHS says it is normal to lose between 50 and 100 hairs a day, often without noticing, and DermNet puts the figure at up to about 100 a day as part of the normal hair cycle.

Shedding runs on its own timetable. The British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) explains that about 15% of scalp hair is normally in the shedding phase, rising to 30% or more in telogen effluvium, which often happens around 3 months after a trigger such as illness or stress, with the shedding phase lasting 3 to 6 months. A simple way to check is the white towel test. For a week, pick the hairs out of your hat lining, scarf and brush and lay them on a white towel beside the hairs from the plughole. Some of those signs have specific medical explanations.
